A thematic depiction of of Good vs. Evil in Othello.
Desdemona: A pearl
Desdemona is perceived as the embodiment of all things good and is referred to as an angel by Emilia. When Desdemona first arrives at Cyprus Cassio bows down to her and says, "Give renew'd fire to our extincted spirits, and bring Cyprus all comfort."(2.181-82) "The riches of the ship come on shore!"(2.183), which shows us that she is though of as a treasure. By the middle of the play, Iago says, "I shall I turn her virtue into pitch"(2.3.338), change Othello's perception of Desdemona, convincing him that she is unfaithful. When Emilia finds Desdemona after she is murdered, she describes her as loyal and kind wife to Othello, even though he disagrees and says "She was false as water". Desdemona also shows that she is a kind a loyal wife even in her last moments of life, when Emilia finds her and asks her who killed her, she defends Othello by saying "nobody; I myself"(5.2.125). That quote shows that she is a selfless person and truly loves Othello.
